Transformation of the Mormon Culture Region by Ethan R. Yorgason,

Transformation of the Mormon Culture Region by Ethan R. Yorgason,
In the late nineteenth century the Mormon "culture region" of the American West was considered radical, identified by non-Mormons with sexual immorality, communalism, and anti-Americanism. Today, social conservatism marks the region. How did this shift occur? In this unique study, Ethan R. Yorgason foregrounds the concept of region and traces the conformist-conservative trajectory that arose from intense moral and ideological clashes between Mormons and non-Mormons from 1880 to 1920. Non-Mormons worried that Mormons would establish an un-American society in the West, while Mormons feared for the very existence of their church. An example of the new regional geography, Yorgason's work treats culture as an arena of political struggle. Looking through the lenses of regional geography, history, and cultural studies, Yorgason investigates shifting moral orders relating to gender authority, economic responsibility, and national loyalty. He particularly focuses on Mormon feminism, communitarianism, nationalism, and home life. Transformation of the Mormon Culture Region charts the cultural contradictions of both Mormons and non-Mormons and how they were resolved over time by a narrowing of the range of moral positions on gender (in favor of Victorian gender relations), the economy (in favor of individual economics), and the nation (identifying with national power and might). Mormons and non-Mormons together constructed an effective coexistence while retaining regional distinctiveness.

Mormon History by Ronald W. Walker,
Mormon History by Ronald W. Walker,
A companion volume to their massive bibliography Studies in Mormon History, 1830-1997, this descriptive history by a team of top Mormon scholars provides a comprehensive view of how the writing of Mormon history has evolved since the establishment of the church. Mormon History offers an interpretive survey of Mormon historical writings, from the partisan and often ephemeral history of the nineteenth century through the shift in the first half of the twentieth toward a more balanced and professional approach to the "new Mormon history" that has emerged since World War II. In addition to laying out Mormon historiography, the authors examine Mormon biography and autobiography and discuss social science literature on the Mormons. Two valuable appendixes round out this volume, one on the development and nature of Mormon imprints, the other on conducting historical research in Mormon sources.

Anti-Mormonism - In general usage, anti-Mormonism is more than mere criticism of or disagreement with Latter Day Saint doctrines or policies; rather, it involves opposition to the religion's existence, usually by other Christians on grounds of faith, or by others on political or sociological grounds. Anti-Mormonism refers to affirmative opposition to Mormonism as an institution.

Mormonism and Judaism - Mormonism and Judaism share significant differences and similarities. As Mormons believe themselves to be either direct descendents of the Israelites or adopted into the House of Israel, Judaism is a major focus in Mormonism (on and beyond that of Christianity).

Reform Mormonism - Reform Mormonism is a branch of Mormonism that was founded in 2002 by former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). (Commonly called "The Mormon Church," the Utah-based LDS Church is but one of many churches--albeit the largest--to have emerged from the Latter Day Saint movement begun by Joseph Smith in the late 1820's.

Women and Mormonism - The status of women in Mormonism has been a source of public debate beginning prior to the death of Joseph Smith, Jr. in 1844.
